About Jackfield Brass Band
Jackfield Brass Band is a Championship Section band based in Shropshire.
The band was formed at the end of the 19th Century, originating as a fife and drum band in 1893, then converting to the more fashionable brass band in 1895. 1901 saw the appointment of George Aston as bandmaster, and under his guidance the band soon started winning prizes in contests. This led to the band being renamed 'The Jackfield Prize Band' in 1906. In 1923 a new set of silver plated instruments was purchased and the band was again renamed, this time to the 'Jackfield Prize Silver Band'.
The period during and after the war proved a difficult one for the band and the local village. The continued depletion of local industry, the landslip in Jackfield, and the closure of the Severn Valley Railway all took their toll. The band can be proud to say that whatever the hardships, it has maintained its presence and continued to entertain audiences.
From 1980, the band started to achieve excellent results in the Fourth Section contests, and were rewarded with promotion into the Third Section. The good results continued and so did the climb through the sections. The band earned promotion directly into the First Section, skipping the Second Section.
The band have represented the Midlands four times at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. They have also been West Midlands Brass Band Association prize-winners on many occasions, including being the WMBBA First Section champion band of 2000.
The good form continued to this day, with the band being promoted to the Championship Section in 2003, and competing at a very high level ever since.
