Brass Band
The Tilbury Band is a traditional Brass Band, founded in 1919 by the Tilbury Branch of the National Union of Railwaymen.
On July 1st, the first meeting of The Tilbury Railwaymen Band was formed. We are very proud to still be competing locally and nationally in the Second Section and the band working hard right now on the test piece for the Area Championships in April.
We are also hugely excited about next year, 2019, Tilbury Bands Centennial year.
Member Chris Hanson says everyone is already looking forward to making the next 18 months very special. “We have lots of things in the pipeline and want to make it a celebration for everyone to remember,†he said. “We will also have a packed programme of events through this year and we are hoping to increase our numbers and also our junior membership.â€
“To that end we have been discussing the possibilities of becoming a central hub in the Thurrock area to teach how to read music, plus, how to play an instrument to children & adults, possibly a Saturday morning music school, but this would be pursued if the government were to abolish music lessons in schools all together, surely an atrocious act by the government if it were to happen. We are proud to be an almost fully self-funded band and have been for almost 100 years, however we do ask for a subsidised fee towards costs for the band hall, use of instruments, etc.â€
Tilbury Band already runs a training band “The Tilbury Brass & Percussion Academy†which brings together intermediate as well as those less experienced players and “raw beginners†of all ages.
The Academy aims to provide advanced tuition to players, increasing their musical knowledge, playing ability and providing experience in ensemble playing in preparation for moving on to the senior band.
The academy rehearses on Sundays from 5pm to 7pm, feel free to come and join us at 101 Dock Road, Tilbury.
