Live Performance
Concert Band
Lambeth Wind Orchestra is a South London Concert Band based in Herne Hill. LWO performs a varied programme of music for the community both formally and informally. Our concert programmes have included music by Gustav Holst, Percy Grainger, Philip Sparke, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Malcolm Arnold and Samuel-Coleridge-Taylor alongside newly written pieces by London based composers. We also enjoy performing a variety of British light music by composers such as Robert Farnon, Eric Coates and Frederick Curzon.
Our performances take place on bandstands around London, including Clapham Common, St James’s Park and Battersea Park, at local festivals and at our own formal concerts.
Lambeth Wind Orchestra is available for hire, and some sponsorship opportunities also exist.
We can perform varied types of music in many settings.
Clapham Common is a large triangular urban park in Clapham, south London. Originally common land for the parishes of Battersea and Clapham, it was converted to parkland under the terms of the Metropolitan Commons Act 1878.
One of the most iconic landmarks in the centre of Clapham Common is the bandstand constructed in 1890. It is the largest bandstand in London and a Grade II Listed Building. In 2005–2006, a full restoration of the bandstand and surrounding landscape took place, partly funded by an £895,000 lottery grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund matched by £300,000 from Lambeth Council and a further £100,000 from local fundraising efforts and the proceeds of the Ben and Jerry’s Summer Sundae event held on the Common.
It is now home to many musical events from July through to September each year.
