King Groovy & the Horn Stars was formed in 2005 in Herne Hill by talented local musicians who love big band music, with the desire to perform some of its greatest and most challenging arrangements.
Since then the band has played at a huge variety of venues and events, including jazz clubs, swing dance nights, festivals, pubs, private parties and award ceremonies.
Notable venues include the 100 Club, Pizza Express Jazz Club, Southbank Centre, Toulouse Lautrec, Wilton’s Music Hall, the Apollo Hammersmith, The Ivy House pub and the Rivoli Ballroom.
We play a foot-tapping mix of classic swing, jazz, Latin, pop and funk, plus original music by band members – all performed with infectious energy, feeling and style.
Clapham Common is a large triangular urban park in Clapham, south London. Originally common land for the parishes of Battersea and Clapham, it was converted to parkland under the terms of the Metropolitan Commons Act 1878.
One of the most iconic landmarks in the centre of Clapham Common is the bandstand constructed in 1890. It is the largest bandstand in London and a Grade II Listed Building. In 2005–2006, a full restoration of the bandstand and surrounding landscape took place, partly funded by an £895,000 lottery grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund matched by £300,000 from Lambeth Council and a further £100,000 from local fundraising efforts and the proceeds of the Ben and Jerry’s Summer Sundae event held on the Common.
It is now home to many musical events from July through to September each year.
