Description

Alton Concert Orchestra is based in the market town of Alton in the East Hampshire District of Hampshire.

We have around 60 keen musicians and are always pleased to welcome more string players.

We put on three or more concerts a year, including the very popular ‘Last Night of the Proms’ in Alton Public Gardens in July each year.

The Orchestra exists to serve the local community and to provide a forum for all musicians who enjoy playing in an ensemble. We have a policy of welcoming anyone without the requirement of an audition and we maintain no restrictions on section size within the orchestra. However at the discretion of the Musical Director, we may occasionally have to operate a waiting list for certain oversubscribed instruments.

This year Alton Concert Orchestra is proudly sponsored by Alton's Bookers & Bolton Solicitors. This funding is used for the purchase and hire of new music for the orchestra.

Description

Comprising 4.5 acres in the centre of the town the Public Gardens forms a delightfully pleasant oasis away from the main street bustle, with lawns, sheltering trees, shrubs, flower beds and children's play area (including special needs play equipment.)

The gardens open daily at 7.00am and are closed at 5.00pm from 29th October until 25th March.

The jewel in the crown of the Public Gardens has got to be the Bandstand, and as part of the Town Council's summer entertainment programme it provides the ideal setting for several free musical concerts for the local residents to enjoy.

Alton's new Bandstand was commissioned in 2012 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen. The design retains the original base which now supports the new red, white and blue ornate steel structure sporting bosses of the Hampshire Rose, the Alton shield and diamond shaped lattice work.

Alton's famous Last Night of the Proms open-air concert.

The concert is staged in Alton's Public Gardens with gates opening at 6pm for the concert at 7.30pm. Free admission with donations to towards staging the event greatly appreciated on the evening.

Alton's Last Night of the Proms is brought to you by the Alton Concert Orchestra and Alton Town Council with headline sponsor Specsavers Alton and the support of our Proms Patrons.

Cocktails, Pimms, Prosecco and Beers are available from the bar, along with hot drinks, churros and ice creams also purchasable on the evening.

Please note: the Public Gardens will be closed during the day for rehearsals until the gates reopen at 6pm for the event, the play area will remain closed for the evening out of respect for the musicians and singers performing.
