Concert Band
We are a local community band for adults and our aim is to enjoy making music as well as raising money for charity.
We are a friendly group and new members are always welcome. There are no auditions - you just need to be able to read music and have a level of proficiency on your instrument to enable you to get the most out of the music and the experience within the band. Our origins date back 20 years and we have been growing in size and reputation ever since. We now have around 35 members who meet every week to play a wide repertoire of music under the baton of our Musical Director Wesley Carroll. To broaden our experience further, we have recently formed ensembles which rehearse weekly in rotation following our main rehearsal.
The band regularly perform around the Ashford area; we play at summer fetes, on our town bandstand and other local bandstands too, at celebratory and commemorative events and wherever else we are invited! We have established our own annual Christmas concert where we raise funds for local charities chosen by the band. If you wish to book us for an event, please get in touch via our website.
Rehearsals take place Thursday evenings from 7pm-8.30pm at the John Wesley Primary School, John Wesley School Road, Singleton, Ashford, Kent, TN23 5LW and we are very grateful to the Head and School Governors of the School for the use of their facilities. Membership fees are a modest £12 per month.
Ashford Bandstand stands as a steadfast cultural anchor within Victoria Park, a public space acquired for the town in 1898. Since its installation in 1901, it has consistently served as a focal point for community gathering, hosting everything from spirited concerts and public rallies to open-air religious services. Today, it continues this legacy, a cherished venue for local and touring artists, fostering a vibrant public square for Ashford's residents.
Beneath its sheltering roof, the air often hums with the anticipation of performance, a palpable energy that spills out across the surrounding lawns. The open-sided structure allows the sounds of music – be it a brass band's resonant chords or an acoustic set's delicate melodies – to drift freely, mingling with the gentle rustle of leaves from the mature trees. It’s a space where the ephemeral magic of live performance feels intimately connected to the enduring natural beauty of the park.
Positioned amidst the expansive green of Victoria Park, the bandstand benefits from its picturesque setting, offering audiences ample space to relax on the grass. The park itself provides excellent accessibility, with step-free routes and dedicated parking. For refreshments, Harper's Cafe, located within the park's Community Hub, offers a convenient spot for a pre-show coffee or a post-performance debrief.
More than just a stage, Ashford Bandstand embodies the town's commitment to accessible culture and shared experiences. It remains a vital communal asset, a place where memories are made and the collective spirit of Ashford finds its rhythm, year after year.
