Description

The Grand Old Lady of Oxford Street is a proper local institution, and you can't help but feel the history the second you walk through the doors. Built back in 1891, it’s got that classic, ornate Victorian grandeur that modern, breeze-block arenas just can’t replicate. It feels like a genuine occasion stepping into the foyer, with the plush reds and golds setting the mood perfectly before you’ve even found your seat.

Navigating the place does require a bit of know-how depending on where your tickets are. If you’re heading for the Stalls, be prepared for 15 steps down from the main entrance, as the lift doesn't go down to that level. Up in the Grand Tier, the views are sweeping but the steps are famously steep, and legroom across the older parts of the building can be a bit of a squeeze. It’s always worth grabbing a drink at the bar early and getting settled in rather than rushing to your seat at the last second.

On the accessibility front, the Circle level is where the venue really gets it right. There’s a customer lift straight up from the ground floor, and the wheelchair spaces are brilliantly positioned at the rear of the Circle on Row R. The front-of-house staff are helpful and attentive without being fussy or overbearing, and they’re incredibly well set up for guide dogs and access card users, which takes the stress out of the evening.

Overall, it’s a cracking venue for a midweek matinee or a Saturday night out. It is entirely cashless at the bars, so you can leave the change at home. The Palace delivers a proper, traditional theatre experience that reminds you why live entertainment is always worth leaving the house for.

Inside, the theatre's ornate Victorian architecture, enhanced by Frank Matcham's redecorations, creates an atmosphere of classic theatrical grandeur. The plush velvet of the seating and the warm, ambient glow of the house lights contribute to a sense of anticipation before the curtain rises, inviting audiences into a rich, immersive experience.

The Palace hosts a diverse programme, from major touring musicals and acclaimed plays to opera, ballet, and stand-up comedy, plus Panto. Frequently staging regional and UK premieres, it draws in significant productions that enrich Manchester's cultural landscape and attract audiences from across the country.
