Description
The Buttermarket stands as a significant cultural and entertainment hub for Shrewsbury and the wider Shropshire region, housed within an iconic Grade II listed building. Originally constructed in 1835 as a terminal warehouse for the Shropshire Union Canal, its enduring presence on Howard Street has seen it evolve from a vital commercial artery to a cherished community asset, having been saved from demolition to serve a broader public purpose.
Inside, the venue unfolds across three distinct floors – The Cellars, Main Arena, and VIP Mezzanine – each offering a unique atmosphere. The imposing neo-classical columns at the entrance hint at its grand past, while within, the original arched cellars provide a sense of history. The air often carries the faint, sweet scent of spilled drinks and the vibrant pulse of Europe's largest laser light show, creating an immersive experience for patrons.
Practical considerations are well-addressed, with the venue offering multiple bars across its levels, ensuring refreshments are always at hand. An accessible design caters to a broad audience, and outdoor terrace areas provide space for respite. Conveniently situated just a short walk from Shrewsbury's main train and bus stations, it remains readily accessible for both local and visiting attendees.
Throughout the year, The Buttermarket hosts a diverse calendar of events, ranging from live music performances and comedy nights to banqueting, conferences, and themed club promotions. It regularly accommodates charity balls, private celebrations, and various indoor festivals, cementing its role as a dynamic centre for regional gatherings and entertainment.
