Canterbury Live presents: Madness Event Title Pic

Madness return to Canterbury this summer for a huge outdoor show at the iconic St Lawrence Ground, Kent Cricket on Sunday 9th August, bringing their unmistakable energy, unrivalled showmanship and one of the most celebrated catalogues in British music. With gates opening from 2pm and a 10:30pm curfew, expect a full afternoon and evening of festival vibes and anthems in the heart of Kent.

Formed in Camden Town, North London, in 1976, Madness rose to fame as one of the defining bands of the two-tone ska revival, blending ska, pop and new wave with humour and distinctly British storytelling. Over their long career, the band have enjoyed enormous success, achieving 15 UK Top-10 singles including One Step Beyond, Baggy Trousers, It Must Be Love, and their No. 1 hit House of Fun.

In November 2023, they released their thirteenth studio album, Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est La Vie - their first in seven years and their first ever UK No. 1 studio album. More than four decades on, Madness remains a beloved institution, still touring, recording and bringing their signature energy to audiences new and old. Their headline set in Canterbury promises a celebration of timeless hits.

They’re joined by very special guests Cast, fresh from touring as part of the Oasis Live 25 celebrations and known for a run of massive 90s anthems including Walkaway, Alright and Finetime. Completing the lineup are The Beat ft. Ranking Jr, Ordinary Boys and more coming soon.

6+. All under 18s must be accompanied by an adult (aged 21 or over). No unaccompanied under 18s are allowed on site.

Description

The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, stands as a significant cultural and sporting asset within Canterbury, deeply woven into the fabric of Kent's community life. Beyond its primary role as the historic home of Kent County Cricket Club since 1847, it functions as a dynamic regional hub, regularly hosting a diverse calendar of events that draw visitors from across the county and further afield. Its enduring presence on Old Dover Road underscores its status as a focal point for shared experiences and collective engagement.

Within its various stands and hospitality suites, a sense of understated heritage pervades, where the polished wood of the bars catches the light, and the hushed murmur of anticipation before an event hangs in the air. Spaces like the Chiesman Pavilion or the Cornwallis Room offer adaptable environments, from formal meeting setups to more relaxed social gatherings, each retaining a distinct character without ostentation. The design prioritises functionality and comfort, allowing the focus to remain on the event at hand.

The ground offers practical amenities for attendees, including accessible viewing platforms and facilities, ensuring a welcoming environment for all. Refreshments are readily available from various outlets, operating as a cashless venue for convenience. While parking is available, particularly for those with accessibility needs, the venue encourages public transport, with bus stops directly outside and train stations within walking distance.

Throughout the year, the venue's expansive grounds and adaptable indoor spaces accommodate a broad spectrum of events. These range from major sporting fixtures, including county and international cricket matches, to large-scale outdoor concerts featuring prominent musical acts. Additionally, it serves as a setting for conferences, corporate functions, and community gatherings, reflecting its versatility as a premier event destination in the South East.
