ENGLAND'S TALES OF THE COUNCIL HOUSE KID

A new theatre show from FRANCIS DUNNERY

Get ready for a powerful and nostalgic journey back to the heart of working-class Britain in the 1960s and 70s. England's Tales of the Council House Kid is a powerful, deeply nostalgic theatre show and living memoir. Through vivid, heartfelt stories and unforgettable songs, you'll experience life growing up on English council estates, a world of camaraderie, grit, and romantic dreams. This isn't just a performance, it's a living memoir, celebrating the humour and resilience forged in the shadow of Britain's small towns, cities, tower blocks and council estates.

Join me from February 1st to March 1st for a show that will stir your memory and lift your spirits. The performance features some of my old songs that soundtracked those formative years, along with a few brand new tunes that bring the past right into the present. Whether you grew up in a council house or simply appreciate a moving, authentic piece of collective British history, this show promises an evening of raw, beautiful storytelling and music.

Description

The Gate Arts Centre, a Grade II listed former Presbyterian church in Cardiff's Roath area, stands as a significant cultural asset, fostering creativity and community engagement. This registered charity provides a diverse programme of arts and outreach, serving as a vital hub for local residents and a destination for wider audiences seeking enriching experiences.

Within its historic walls, the venue retains much of its original character, with the Grand Theatre featuring original wooden pews that offer a tangible connection to its past. The Dance Studio, too, incorporates the building's heritage, including the carved pulpit and ornate columns, creating a distinctive atmosphere. The air often carries the subtle scent of old stone and polished wood, blending with the murmur of conversation from the relaxed cafe bar.

Practical considerations are well-addressed, with the venue offering comprehensive accessibility, including ramped entrances, a lift, and accessible toilet facilities. While there is no dedicated garden space, the extensively stocked bar in the cafe provides refreshments for patrons.

Throughout the year, The Gate hosts a broad spectrum of events, from musical performances and theatrical productions to comedy nights, spoken word events, and visual arts exhibitions. It also facilitates various workshops and community initiatives, ensuring a dynamic and varied calendar of cultural offerings.
