Named after Thomas Morley’s penchant for mixing instrument families, the Morley Consort is an early music ensemble dedicated to radical historical performance and applied research.
The members blend craftsmanship—including reconstructing experimental period instruments and bows—with rigorous primary source study to explore underrepresented repertoire, historical pedagogy, and performance norms. By challenging established conventions and sharing their discoveries through engaging concert experiences, the ensemble aims to bring fresh, uncharted sound-worlds to modern audiences.
Description
St. Lawrence Chapel stands as a pivotal heritage and cultural centre within Ashburton, its ancient stones bearing witness to centuries of local life. Originally a private chapel for the Bishop of Exeter, it transitioned into a grammar school for over 600 years before its current incarnation as a vibrant community hub, managed by the dedicated Guild of St. Lawrence. This Grade II* listed building is a testament to the town's enduring history and its commitment to preserving its past for future generations.
Inside, the chapel exudes a quiet dignity. The rococo plasterwork, adorned with coats-of-arms and delicate pendants, catches the eye, while the smooth, worn surfaces of the original Gothic-panelled school benches invite contemplation of the countless pupils who once sat there. The gentle light filtering through the round-arched windows illuminates the intricate details of the historic interior, creating an atmosphere of reflective calm.
The chapel operates seasonally, typically opening its doors to the public from May through September on select days. While a formal garden is not specified, its forecourt often becomes an extension of the event space, and refreshments are frequently offered during public openings and gatherings. The Guild of St. Lawrence, a registered charity, oversees its upkeep and programming, relying on community involvement to sustain this important asset.
Throughout the year, St. Lawrence Chapel hosts a diverse programme of cultural and civic engagements.
