Join Collati Singers and musical director Trefor Farrow for an evening of beautiful and unexpected choral music at St Andrew’s Church, Ashburton, on Saturday 29 August.
At the heart of the programme is something rather special: the rich sound of the choir combined with the soprano saxophone of Andy Williamson. By popular request, Andy joins the choir again for James Whitbourn’s sublime Son of God Mass, which received a standing ovation when they performed it together last October in Buckfast Abbey. He also features in Cristóbal de Morales’s exquisite renaissance masterpiece Parce Mihi Domine, with Trefor Farrow having created original saxophone and organ interludes woven between the choir’s verses especially for this performance – giving this 16th-century work a strikingly fresh dimension.
The programme ranges from the Renaissance to the present day, with the serene French-sounding beauty of Dom Sebastian Wolff’s Missa Brevis, Lucy Walker’s gorgeous a cappella Give Me Your Stars, and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s atmospheric Whispers of Summer. David Davies accompanies the Whitbourn, Wolff and Morales on the organ.

Doors and the church bar open at 7pm, serving beer, wine and soft drinks, with a chance to enjoy a drink before the concert and again during the interval. Come early, relax and soak up the atmosphere!

St Andrew's Church stands as a venerable anchor within the Ashburton community, a Grade I listed building that has served as the parish church since the 12th century. Within its grandly proportioned 15th-century walls, incorporating earlier 13th and 14th-century elements, a profound sense of history pervades. The cool, smooth touch of ancient granite columns, supporting double-chamfered arches, contrasts with the warmth of the timber wagon roofs overhead. The air often carries the faint, comforting scent of old stone and polished wood, particularly when soft light filters through the restored perpendicular traceried windows.
Conveniently situated on West Street, a brief walk from the town centre, the church offers practical amenities for its visitors and event attendees. Refreshments, including tea and coffee, are frequently provided in the adjacent church hall following gatherings, with the possibility of outdoor hospitality in the gardens during warmer months. The venue also considers accessibility for all who wish to attend.
Throughout the year, St Andrew's hosts a diverse calendar of events beyond its regular services, which blend traditional and contemporary worship styles.
