SOAS Ceilidh Band, Ashburton Ceilidh Band & special guest Peyman Heydarian (santur)
Event Type
Genre : Music - Folk/blues/world
Description
The SOAS Ceilidh Band began at the School of Oriental and African Studies (part of London University). Led by Ed Emery (who these days can sometimes be found in his Teignmouth shack) it's great to have the band back again for a night of fun and revelry! There'll be some called dancing, plus time to do your own thing, or sit and have a drink and a chat, and listen to the music.
Ed has been fomenting more ceilidh-type activity in Ashburton, and the beginnings of an Ashburton Ceilidh band are emerging and will be there on the night. Also, we have a special guest Peyman Heydarian playing santur (an Iranian hammered dulcimer - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santur - and see Peyman in action here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGaemQtYeS0
The SOAS band is committed to cultural-political action, and plays at protests and picket lines. It also tours internationally, as part of its commitment to “Ceilidh beyond Borders” (Paris, Venice and Istanbul in 2023-24). But it's not all politics, it's also about great music and having a good time.
