Description

April sees us welcome spring with works from Mozart, Beethoven and Mendelssohn on Sunday 26 April and provides a rare chance to see the LGSO in smaller, more chamber-style setting.

Così fan tutte was composed by Mozart at the suggestion of Emperor Joseph II, and premiered in 1790. The opera has a general theme of 'fiancée swapping', a practice which dates back to the 13th century, and features elements of Shakespeare's The Taming of The Shrew. The overture is one of Mozart's best-known orchestral works.

Beethoven's Violin Concerto, which first premiered in 1806 was originally unsuccessful until a revival in 1844 conducted by Mendelssohn. Since then it has become known as one of the world's best-known violin concertos and can regularly be heard in concert halls around the world.

Mendelssohn's (the same one that conducted the revival of Beethoven's Violin Concerto) Symphony No.5: Reformation, was composed in honour of the 300 anniversary of the Augsburg Confession a key document of Lutheranism. It was published over 20 years after Mendelssohn's death at which point it became known as the Reformation Symphony - a term coined by Mendelssohn's sister, Fanny.
