MIGRANT VOICES IN LONDON (Short) - 4pm
Ahmed Sinno, Anna Virabyan, Cina Aissa, Muhammad Arkam Babar
This short film is made up entirely of the visuals and narratives
of four migrants living in London. As part of a participatory
research project, Cina, Anna, Ahmed and Muhammad were
invited to film their daily lives in the summer of 2018. This was
followed by open-ended conversations in which each of them
reflect on their experiences. These are the lives of people who
are marginalised in various ways, encountering legal, political,
social, racial borders and hierarchies that might be invisible
to others. Yet, they also experience London life as others do
with friends, family, leisure, art, shopping and travel. This
film shows London as a space of mobility of continuous
movement and of borders and restrictions.
A Q&A FOR THIS SHORT WILL FOLLOW AFTER THE SCREENING OF STYX.

Director: WOLFGANG FISCHER
Starring: Susanne Wolff, Gedion Oduor Wekesa, Felicity Babao
After dramatic opening scenes we follow doctor Rieke
(Wolff) on holiday attempting to fulfil a long-held dream by
sailing alone from Gibraltar to Ascension Island in the Atlantic.
Her voyage changes completely when she comes across a
boat load of stricken migrants and is forced to make life or
death decisions. The contrast between her Western European
lifestyle and that of the desperate West African migrants could
not be more stark. A tense and provocative, gripping drama
encompassing themes of racism and empathy, western
privilege and moral responsibility.
