THE PHEROMOANS
Southern England's masters of deadpan lo-fi make a long-overdue first visit to Cambridge. Over the past 12 years or so The Pheromoans have documented the mundane, banal and trite lowlights of life on the edges of London's gravitational pull. Vocalist Russell Walker twists aspects of boredom and absurdity into surreal, sarcastic vignettes, setting them to primitive garage, precarious electronics, or meandering versions. After releases on their own Savoury Days label and the always-exemplary Upset! The Rhythm, 2019 sees the group release their most rounded album to date, "County Lines", their second on the equally excellent Alter label. A fitting accompaniment to our chaotic and farcical times, it's a collection of brutally droll bon mots set to distended synthesiser, itinerant guitar, and nigh on contradictory jazzy rhythms. Almost the antithesis of rock 'n' roll, The Pheromoans are the necessary narrators of the let-down that is early 21st century Britain.
