The Study Society Mevlevi Turners
In 1963, The Study Society became one of the very few organisations ever authorised to teach the Mevlevi whirling dervish 'turning' tradition (devised by Jalalu'ddin Rumi) outside Turkey. The turning is a part of a ceremony known as a 'Mukabele' (meaning 'coming face to face'). The ceremony is open to people of all beliefs and backgrounds. As well as having a deep transforming effect on the turners, the ceremony has a profound inner symbolism, which represents humankind's inner journey back to the realisation of his/her essential oneness with God and the unity of all creation. After the whirling dervishes (Kim Richardson and Tomo Goto have turned during this evening's event you will be invited to join them for 'slow turning'. This is a meditative practice that is part of the Mevlevi ttradition. Turning continues to be taught, , practised and shared with the public today at The Study Society's home at Colet House in West London. The charity exists to advance the education of the public on the unity of consciousness through a multidisciplinary blend of sacred and secular knowledge across philosophy, science, spirituality and the arts: www.studysociety.org

Poetry and music

This evening we will have readings of poems by Rumi in English translation by Kim Richardson, together with music and song from eastern and far eastern traditions performed by Michael Ormiston and Candida Valentino Mongolian Khöömii Overtone/Undertone Singing, Turkish Ney reed flute, Tibetan Singing Bowls, Frame Drums, Whirling Wind Gong, Kyrgyz Kyl Kyiak Horse Hair Fiddle and more.
