Jenny Sturgeon
Jenny Sturgeon is a singer-songwriter "who brings together the old and new with a rare skill" (R2 Magazine). Jenny's music is rich with imagery and her songs are bound together by common threads of folklore, nature and the connection people have with the wild.
Sturgeon's songcraft is at the centre of her engaging and honest performance, with accompaniment on guitar, harmonium and dulcimer she has been described as a wonderful singer who can change the atmosphere in the room with her affecting delivery (Boo Hewerdine). In 2018 she was nominated as Composer Of The Year in the Scots Trad Music Awards.
With her three solo records, Source To Sea, From The Skein and The Wren and The Salt Air; Jenny is currently working on her next album - a collection of songs inspired by Nan Shepherd's book 'The Living Mountain'.
Musical collaborations include writing and performing in the critically acclaimed alt-folk band Salt House and in the bird and migration inspired project, Northern Flyway; a Creative Scotland and PRS Foundation funded audio-visual project that Jenny co-wrote with Inge Thomson - described as "like watching a David Attenborough documentary but with awesome music!.
Jenny's music has been played on BBC Radio Scotland, Radio 3, Radio 6 Music, Radio 2, and Radio Nan Gaidheal - including being featured as artist of the week and doing live sessions for Travelling Folk and BBC Radio 3. Jenny's release 'The Wren and The Salt Air' - a commission for The National Trust of Scotland - featured on national STV news. Her song 'Charmer' was featured at number 9 of The Herald's best 100 songs of 2018.
Matthew Shepherd
Hailed as one of the most exciting new singer-songwriters on the acoustic music scene, Matthew Shepherd is a 24 year-old singer-songwriter who has been delighting audiences in London, Essex and beyond with his collection of self penned songs. His debut studio album 'Top of the tree' was released in June 2015 and only took a day for the album to break into the iTunes Top 100 Singer/Songwriter Album Chart. His songs cover the happiness and heartbreak of love, with his warm, intimate and delicate style.
In 2016, Matthew released an Acoustic EP entitled 'The Sea', which reached the Acoustic Magazine's Top 10 Best New Music of September 2016. Matthew also embarked on an extensive national tour which included dates at Ronnie Scott's and 3 dates on the Isle of Wight.
With club and concert performances plus 2 European tours under his belt, Matthew released his second studio album 'Waiting Up At Night' in July 2018 warm, gentle and affecting folk music from the heart.
Nina Clark
Nina Clark is a musical activist, minstrel and singer-songwriter. ALPHA is her third studio album, and a creative landmark in her career, being the first musical recipient of the Arts Council's 'DYCP' fund in UK's South East. Her first album was recorded in Chicago, an extraordinary experience which gave her the confidence to self-produce her second album.
A seasoned performer, Nina's live sets are designed to be fun and uplifting, with John Fordham of The Guardian citing ..cool, lyrical originals... Her musical activism is founded on a belief that music should be available to all, a mission which led her to start www.musicalwalkabout.com a minstrel project for people facing social isolation.
Nina's work has been performed by Grammy Award Winner Kurt Elling, and has performed in the UK, Dubai, Germany, New Zealand and the US. Her musical association with Sam Dunn and Jules Jackson spans many years, and Steve Hanley's addition to the Alpha Band is the missing piece of the puzzle.
Stage times:
Nina Clark 8pm
Matthew Shepherd 8.50pm
Jenny Sturgeon 9.40pm
