Description

A series of artist film screenings exploring current social and political concerns including digital identity and communities, perceived gender roles, migration and cultural identity. The film screening will be followed by an open Skype discussion with artist Lucy Beech.

Lucy Beech's new film Reproductive Exile follows the fictional story of a woman embarking in cross-boarder assisted reproduction. Whilst considering the gender bias in biomedical research the looping film is characterised by the entrapment of a perpetual journey and reveals the protagonists' dependency on an intricate constellation of invisible female bodies; human and non-human, that work, care, constitute and provide for her reproductive journey. These bodies are invisibly linked by the production and sharing of animal and human sex hormones central to reproductive technologies.

Lucy Beech makes films that are often situated between documentary and fiction, and engage with communities of marginalized women.

Beech has recently presented exhibitions and performances at: Tramway, Glasgow, UK; De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, UK; Lafayette Anticipations, Fondation d'entreprise Galeries Lafayette, Paris; Tate Britain, London (2017); the Liverpool Biennale (2016); Maureen Paley, London (2016); Site Gallery, Sheffield (2016); Lisson Gallery London; Frieze Live, London; James Fuentes, New York (2016). Alongside her solo practice Beech has worked with Edward Thomasson (since 2007), with whom she develops choreographies that involve the live construction of sound, together they were the recipients of the Paul Hamlyn Award UK, 2016.
