Independent Venue Week presents: Yr Ods + Papur Wal

For the very first time Independent Venue Week has national ambassadors, and we are very excited to have Huw Stephens on board as our Welsh ambassador.

Debuting his role, Huw is curating two Welsh language showcases in Edinburgh and Liverpool with the help of PYST. Headlined by Yr Ods with Papur Wal as support, we are excited to see what some of the finest Welsh language bands have to offer.

Yr Ods
Yr Ods have previously released two critically acclaimed albums Troi a Throsi (2011) and Llithro (2013) both released via Sain. Live they have extensively toured the UK and Europe, performed at big festivals including Maes B, Swn, Green Man, festival No 6 and Glastonbury, as well as achieving the career high of headlining National Eisteddfod of Wales alongside a forty-piece orchestra, and an audience of two-thousand fans.

Yr Ods have re-grouped to create laith y Nefoedd, their third and undoubtedly most ambitious album to date. Self recorded and self released, 'Iaith y Nefoedd' is a concept album released alongside a fiction novel by acclaimed author Llwyd Owen.

Papur Wal
Papur Wal are a trio based in Cardiff via North Wales. Formed in 2017, but formalised as a three piece a year later, their influences range from 90s bands such as Built to Spill, Pavement and Teenage Fanclub to 70s rock like Big Star, Todd Rundgren and Nils Lofgren.

Their combination of Slacker and Power Pop gives them a unique scope and blends sugary melodies with shape shifting tempo changes. Their debut EP, "Lle yn y byd mae hyn?" (2019) ("Where in the world is this?") introduced their story-telling nautre, aswell as their ability to discuss emotive and difficult themes and cemented Papur Wal as a band in the Welsh language music scene. Following quickly on the heels of their debut EP was Double-A side "O'n ni'n Ffrindia / When he's Gone" (2019) which received plays on BBC Radio 6 and BBC Radio 1 and began to explore their 70s rock-inspired side but maintained their slacker roots. New singles are on their way in early 2020, with the lead single Meddwl am Hi scheduled for release on Dydd Miwsig Cymru and an album in the not-so-distant future
