Joseph Wright and the Enlightenment in the Midlands
Arkwright Society Evening Talk
7.00pm Cheese & Wine: 7.30pm Talk starts
'So WRIGHT'S Bold pencil from Vesuvio's height Hurls his red lavas to the troubled night'; So wrote Erasmus Darwin about the Derby artist, Joseph Wright, in his poetic dissertation on plant life, The Botanic Garden. Wright mixed as freely with scientists, engineers, industrialists - not to mention genuine polymaths like Lunar Society man, Darwin - as he did with other artists. This talk by WEA lecturer Bob Moulder will look at how the products of his 'bold pencil' offer a window into so many aspects of the Enlightenment and the early Industrial Revolution, both in the Midlands and the wider world.
Cost: £8. Your ticket includes cheese and wine.
