The Real Music Club Presents .... Davy O'list + Servants Of Science Event Title Pic

Description

The Real Music Club seeks to find the best music we can that we believe will inspire and entertain. Focusing on originality and uniqueness we pride ourselves on putting something different on every month in Brighton & Hove. This month we present ....

DAVY O'LIST: one of the most groundbreaking and talented guitarists of the British Rock scene whose vision of fusing classical music and jazz elements with rock helped lay the foundations for Prog Rock. First making his mark on the Swinging 60s in freakbeat R&B outfit The Attack when his song 'Anymore Than I Do' was used by John Peel as the theme tune for his 'Perfumed Garden' show on Radio Caroline, O'List was soon tapped up to be part of P.P Arnold's backing band, The Nice. With Keith Emerson also amongst their ranks The Nice were too good to play the backup role, getting a deal for themselves and releasing debut album, 'The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack' which to this day is cited as a classic and perhaps even the very first Prog album, earning many admirers, including Jimi Hendrix.

Leaving The Nice with his stock high O'List brushed through a series of bands including Pink Floyd (depping at a live show when Syd was awol), Jethro Tull and The Misunderstood. Needing a new project to get his teeth into, O'List was sought after by Bryan Ferry and a then unsigned Roxy Music who needed someone with the skills to shape and refine their early material, featuring as guitarist on their debut Peel session. Davy worked again with Ferry on the singers solo albums, with his sizzling guitar solo on 'The 'In' Crowd' as the standout feature. It was that guitar solo that caught the ear of ex-Sparks' bassist Martin Gordon who recruited O'List for the excellent 'lost' classic album by Glam supergoup Jet and also the Velvet Underground's John Cale who wanted Davy's skills for a live tour.

Returning to the music scene in 1997 with his debut solo album 'Flight of the Eagle' whilst also working on many of his own film and tv projects, Davy followed up in 2015 with the 'Second Thoughts' album, a project he is most proud of. The title is a slight reference to 'The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack' and is a return to his original musical vision, a symphony in four long parts with two extra related songs, stepping up the classical and jazz-fusions to a more advanced level, in line with modern progression and new digital technology, polyphonic synthesizers and midi enhanced equipment. The live band that has been touring 'Second Thoughts' have been getting rave reviews and with Davy O'List enjoying genuine momentum and at the peak of his considerable powers a new album is in the works, set for release in Autumn 2020.

"O'List's guitar tone, surely the best in Western civilisation" Classic Rock Magazine

Our very own Stuart Avis brings SERVANTS OF SCIENCE back to the Real Music Club with a new album in the works looking to build on the success of 'The Swan Song', a progressive concept album with Floydian touches and an epic storyline about the end of the world .... well, they did warn us!
