For Record Store Day 2022, Kathryn Williams will be releasing her definitive collection; ?Introduction?. The compilation will be released on limited edition vinyl via One Little Independent Records on April 23rd.
Following the 2019 retrospective anthology boxset which featured 10 of her previous albums and 10 bonus albums, 2 books, lyrics and memorabilia, the 12 track ?Best Of? features a choice track from each of her records spanning 23 years. Each track was handpicked by Kathryn to walk-through a specific and interesting writing arc and career summary so far.
The Mercury nominated folk-inflected performer has been described as ?a songwriter?s songwriter?, her timeless and searching work has earned her accolades, critical acclaim and a loyal fan-base. ?Introduction? is a celebration of Kathryn?s singular talent and impressive back-catalogue. It acts as a cherry-picked tour through her exceptional musical history, showcasing a range of pop balladry and melancholy acoustics boasting whip-smart poetic lyrism and her unparalleled relatability. This is intelligent, self-aware writing backed with beautifully arranged, natural compositions, curated with remarkable care.
?This record feels like such a mad thing, a vinyl introduction album? she says, ?I remember at art college I bought an introduction to Nick Drake and John Martyn which turned me onto all of their records which I still love. Without those introduction albums I may not have taken a chance on their work. I love the idea of someone discovering my music for the first time, just like I did with lots of artists.
I feel so lucky to be still making music and writing songs. There is so much beauty, heartache, love and longing to capture and I never tire of the chase. Having just one track from each record was so hard to decide but listening to the test pressings it was great hearing them back to back.?
In this new musical world when we talk about an artist?s body of work, we tend to think of a handful of records stretched out across of a handful of years, if we?re lucky. A changing industry and a focus on immediacy has done little to alter such notions, which makes Kathryn Williams something of an anomaly ? releasing 12 full-length albums under her own name since her debut LP, ?Dog Leap Stairs?, released in 1999.
As impressive a stat as that might be, it does little to capture the true magic of Williams work; the enchanting craft that has grown and expanded as she?s moved from one project to the next, from the breakthrough success of her Mercury Prize nominated 'Little Black Numbers' all the way to her Sylvia Plath tribute project 'Hypoxia' and last years Christmas album ?Midnight Chorus?, written with Dame Carol Ann Duffy. Williams has also collaborated and recorded with artists including Chris Difford, Ted Barnes, Thea Gilmore, John Martyn, Joel Salakula, Tobias Froberg, Ed Harcourt, James Yorkston, Marry Waterson, Boo Hewerdine, and Paul Smith.
While her best-known work is characterised by rich and honest songwriting, inspired by the greats, Williams has continually been able to evolve as an artist because she?s always looked outside of such genre boundaries. She continues to listen and learn while, at the same time, writing with a fiery spirit and a sense of adventure that has never once wilted.
