It started out as singer/songwriter Alex Ellis on his own writing and performing solo in whatever London bar would have him. Partly a way to shake the out of work actor funk he had found himself in and partly to vent a rage that only living through years of austerity, post financial crash/pre-Brexit Britain can give a person ?we were all feeling something long before 2016? says Ellis. He would soon find kindred spirits Henry Senior (pedal steel/dobro), Greg Bishop (drums/harmonies) and Tom Rosenfeld (bass) to form the band. A fortunate meeting with Björn Petterson of Rootsy Music, who stumbled on their graveyard slot at the 2020 AMA-UK showcase festival, led to the release of their debut album: ?The Company Of Strangers?, produced by Jim Wallis (Still Corners, Modern Nature, Me For Queen) and recorded entirely live at The Rattle in London?s Tobacco Dock. Ellis recalls, ?At the time everything I was listening to had been recorded live, Neil Young, The Band, Creedence, Van etc. Mostly I guess through necessity as it was all pre-Pro Tools but also those albums have an authenticity I wanted to echo. I felt as it was our debut we needed to sound like the record when we played live and after a few tests I
noticed my vocals never sounded as good when recorded separately from my guitar, and I mean by that my performance sounded more self-conscious and less in the moment. So, we did the whole thing live and just had to accept any flaws we might find in our individual performances if the overall sound of a take was good.? Despite these potential flaws the album was well received and reached number 3 in the European Americana chart and earned the band breakthrough act of the year with Americana-UK plus a nomination for ?UK Song of the Year? at the AMA-UK Awards.
Their music? You can't put your finger on it and maybe you don't need to anyway. It lies somewhere between indie, folk and Americana; basically, just a band playing the songs that come to them about the things they were moved enough by to write down.
Fortunately, the band received sufficient support and encouragement to push
through the earliest 2020's and came out the other side having toured the UK and Europe several times, with many new friends, a sense of hope and a new album to boot.
Our Man In The Field will return in 2023 with their sophomore album ?Gold On The Horizon? recorded in Portland Oregon at Flora Recording and Playback with acclaimed producer Tucker Martine supported by tours in the UK and Europe, both as solo/duo and band.
