Alex Wilson - piano
Freddie Jensen - bass
Kai Craig - drums
The Alex Wilson Trio are a London-based contemporary jazz group, featuring three of most exciting improvisers on the UK scene. Each in demand across London?s premier jazz venues Alex Wilson, Freddie Jensen, and Kai Craig combine the serious command over their instruments with an intense and captivating group dynamic. The group?s music written by Alex Wilson draws on contemporary jazz composers from the European and American jazz scenes, including Kit Downes, Gerald Clayton, Craig Taborn, and others, while also touching on classical music, folk song, and contemporary electronic music.
Since arriving on the London jazz scene in 2019, Alex has been attracting attention for his nuanced, versatile, and dynamic approach to the piano. Currently engaged in a range of projects from jazz/electronic fusion, contemporary pop, to straight-ahead jazz, Alex?s playing is regularly showcased at top venues in the UK and Europe, including recent performances at Jazzkaar Festival, Estonia, La Petite Halle, Paris, the London Jazz Festival, and Ronnie Scott?s Jazz Club. Alex?s music for piano trio represents a new chapter in his creative work and speaks to his wide range of influences and musical experiences. He was awarded the Royal Academy of Music?s Scott Philbrick Jazz Prize in 2022 for his outstanding performance and has previously received the Countess of Munster Postgraduate Award as well as a sponsorship from the Universal Music UK Sound Foundation. He has enjoyed recent successes with the Karim Saber Quartet at the Vortex Jazz Club to a sell-out audience, plus a captivating set at the Hampstead Jazz Club with the Trio in September 2022.
Alex is joined by two of the most sought-after rhythm section players in London in Kai Craig and Freddie Jensen. Kai currently performs with several UK jazz figureheads including Soweto Kinch and Ivo Neame and was named by Gregory Hutchinson as the current drummer in the UK ?who can take the instrument to a new level?. Freddie Jensen brings his exceptional musicianship to each of his varied projects, along with a creative energy at the bass that lays the foundation for the trio?s sound. Having met at the Royal Academy of Music under the tuition of some of the UK?s finest jazz musicians, the group have already made their mark on the London jazz scene and are looking forward to sharing their music to new audiences.
