Robert Cecil stood at the heart of the Elizabethan and Stuart state. He was a vital figure in the transition of power from Elizabeth I to James I and VI. The son of Lord Burghley, Cecil had no choice but politics and became expert in the arts of power and espionage. He also helped to create the new "British" monarchy which has endured ever since.
Stephen Alford is Professor of Early Modern British History at the University of Leeds and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
