Lou Barnell is an award-winning vocalist, sound and performance artist, one of Sound and Music's New Voices 2022 Composers, and one of Manchester Jazz Festival's Hothouse Residents 2023.
She was a winner of the 2021 Oram Awards, supported by The PRS Foundation and BBC Radiophonic Institute in recognition of innovation in sound and technology.
Lou's music communicates synaesthetic experience of sound, hyperfocus and sensory overload as a neurodivergent woman. She creates constellations of materials, wearable music technology, voice and movement.
Her current work is based on her research into 'Live Dreaming'.
This concept explores how musical performance and dreaming have the same functions - to help us know ourselves and find our way.
With 'Live Dreaming she creates a squishy, visecral and immersive approach to performance that reconsiders her body as a mirror, reflecting and refracting parallel states of dreaming and performance.
Lou emulates the duality of the 'performance dream' in her work by creating scores and live performances with shapeshifting, re-useable materials such as ice, wax, silicone and thermoplastic.
Her works have been released on Accidental Records, The Lumen Lake, Pearlhome Records, Doitthissen Records, Earlid, Linear Obsessional Records and The Women Composers Collective.
"Fucking cool stuff, the energy packed into these tracks is really powerful" (Gazelle Twin)
