Description

ERIC CHENAUX (France/Canada)

For nearly two decades, Eric Chenaux has been gently twisting songs into new shapes. Pairing what has been described by the Guardian as ?one of the all-time great singing voices in popular music? with sparse, metronomic rhythms, the Canadian artist is capable of conjuring up songs that feel as familiar and well-trodden as standards. It?s through his spontaneous guitar playing and lightly abrasive pedal improvisation that they change, stretched into something stranger.

On a run of homespun records that began with 2015?s Skullsplitter, Chenaux has started to leave time behind, letting his songs stay for as long as they please. Vamping on simple, domestic melodies, his songs quietly unravel, tangled up in a kind of diffuse jazz music that stays patient, lies low, and drifts away. His guitar makes subtle interventions, warping the original thought that has carried us this far.

Drawing on folk, jazz, and noise, Chenaux?s music travels far while holding us in place. Last year, he released Delights of My Life, released as a trio alongside Phillipe Melanson and Ryan Driver. For this show, he?ll be performing solo.

Wharf Chambers Profile Pic

Description

Wharf Chambers stands as a distinctive cultural anchor in Leeds, operating as a workers' co-operative and members' club. This model ensures its continued dedication to providing an accessible and affordable space for a diverse array of events, driven by collective values rather than commercial imperative. It functions as a vital hub, fostering community and dialogue across the city's varied social landscapes.

Within the walls of a former Victorian pork pie factory, the atmosphere is one of understated industrial charm, softened by the murmur of conversation and the occasional clink of glasses. Exposed brickwork and robust furnishings speak to its heritage, while carefully curated lighting casts a warm, inviting glow, encouraging connection and creative exchange.

Practicalities are thoughtfully addressed; the venue features an outdoor seating area, offering a respite from the city's pace. Accessibility is prioritised, with wheelchair access available via the rear entrance. The bar offers a considered selection of craft ales and other beverages, often complemented by rotating vegan-friendly food pop-ups.

The programming at Wharf Chambers is broad and dynamic, encompassing live music performances, spoken word evenings, film screenings, and engaging political discussions. It regularly hosts club nights, art exhibitions, and workshops, reflecting its commitment to supporting emerging talent and providing a platform for a wide spectrum of cultural expression.
