Laura Wilkie - ?continually rising fiddle star? The Quintessential Review - is from Tain in the Highlands of Scotland with roots both in the Highland traditions and the contemporary folk music scene.

She?s toured worldwide with Kinnaris Quintet, guitar-virtuoso Ian Carr, Ross Ainslie, Salsa Celtica, NITEWORKS and with Scots singers Claire Hastings, Beth Malcolm & Siobhan Miller.

?a musician with plenty new to say with centuries-old material and the eloquent musical connections with which to say it? The Strad
?a dreamy synthesis? Mojo Magazine, 4-star review of Vent
?one of the least traditional traditional Scottish records of this year? At The Barrier
?mesmerising? Celtic Music Radio
?a dynamic and creative arranger and astute interpreter of songs? KLOF Mag

Her latest project Vent centres around women?s work songs - Waulking songs - drawing on Scottish archives and friend, tradition bearer & one woman ceilidh, Rona Lightfoot in Inverness.

Laura has collaborated with Shooglenifty, Man of the Minch, Rachel Sermanni, The Elephant Sessions, Paul Towndrow?s Keywork Orchestra, Fatherson, GRIT Orchestra and many more.

Ian Carr is the Northern Hemisphere?s most inventive, fundamental, jumpin? rhythm guitarist, as spontaneous and heart-stopping as a top-flight game of Premiership footie.

Since the 1980s, Carr has been revered for forging his own path (and providing inspiration for others) in his own musical projects such as the Anglo-Swedish Swåp and Ian Carr & The Various Artists and as a collaborative musician with Kathryn Tickell, Kate Rusby, Eddi Reader, Kris Drever and others.

?There?s a fine line between musical genius and a vortex of chaos and Ian Carr has long danced along it like a reckless Highland dancer with his laces undone.? Sarah Coxon, fRoots
?the most innovative and sympathetic guitarist that Britain has produced in years, in any genre? Andy Cronshaw
?guitar genius and musical pioneer? The Quintessential Review

A bold rhythmic innovator, a master of harmony and diamond fingered melody maker, he?s a one-off and a welcome returner to Colwall where he played an age ago with Swåp. Ian lives in record shops and Sweden.

Colwall Ale House Profile Pic

Description

Colwall Ale House stands as a testament to enduring community spirit, a venerable 16th-century hall that has served the parish and village for nearly five centuries. Originally established for "Church Ales" – communal fundraising events – it continues its legacy as a vital gathering place, owned and maintained by The Church of St James the Great. This historic building remains a cherished asset, regularly hosting a diverse array of local activities and celebrations.

Within its ancient walls, a palpable sense of history permeates the air, mingling with the subtle scent of aged timber. The exposed beams and columns lend an inherent grandeur, yet the overall atmosphere remains inviting and intimate. Soft light filters through the period windows, casting a gentle glow that encourages quiet contemplation or lively conversation, making it a truly characterful setting for any occasion.

Practically appointed for modern use, the venue offers seating for up to 60 guests at tables, or 90 in a theatre-style arrangement. A well-equipped kitchen supports catering needs, while full disabled access and a dedicated accessible toilet ensure comfort for all visitors. Ample parking is available in the adjacent church car park, and an outdoor grass area can be arranged for use, though guests should note the absence of a bar, with a "bring your own" policy often in effect, complemented by provided glassware.

Throughout the year, Colwall Ale House hosts a varied programme, from private celebrations such as wedding receptions and anniversary parties to public concerts, engaging talks, and workshops. It regularly accommodates club meetings, fitness classes, and charity functions, reinforcing its role as a dynamic centre for both intimate gatherings and broader community engagement.
