Sparring Songwriters brings together acclaimed and award-winning Canadian songwriters John Wort Hannam and Chris Ronald for a highly entertaining song smackdown. Actually, John was born in Jersey and Chris grew up in Derby, but they?ve built successful music careers over their many years living in Western Canada. Both have been recognized by the Canadian Folk Music Awards with John winning two for his latest album Long Haul. John with his narrative, lyrically-driven roots style and Chris with his ?poetic lyrics and buttery fusion of Roots and Americana? go head-to-head trying to outdo each other. Accompanying them will be multi-instrumentalist (and referee) Ryland Moranz, a talented songwriter in his own right. Who will emerge victorious from the ultimate folk-off? That?s for the audience to decide!

Recording, rehearsal, performance space, music shop and cafe serving as Derby's music community hub in the heart of the city.

We have been operating as a commercial studio and rehearsal rooms since 2001. Some of the artists who have recorded with us are listed over the page; many of these recordings have gone on to become commercially available, featured in the music press, and have been broadcast on Radio 1 etc.

We specialise in BANDS. The studio consists of a daylit large live room capable of holding 50 people, plus dead space, vocal booth and control room with seating. There is also a kitchen, and now fully functioning shop, selling drinks and snacks, as well as strings, plectrums, drumsticks, and effects pedals

We can utilise our space to create a big live sound or provide a more controlled environment in our dead rooms; this plus an atmosphere of experimentation where anything goes is what we aim for in a session. Having great front end (amps, mics), the right space, correct mic placement and a decent set of ears count for more than any amount of processing power which is why Dubrek is about capturing great performance and ideas rather than 'fixing it in the mix'.

REHEARSAL:
There are hourly rate rooms available from 11am to 11pm, 7 days per week. Each room includes two guitar amps, bass amp, drum kit and PA system AT NO EXTRA COST. If you need guitar cabs we have several Marshall 4x12s available free of charge. You can also request as many mics and stands as you need....
