Description

The Wasps are a Powerpop/Punk band first formed in East London, February 1976 with original lead singer/songwriter Jesse Lynn-Dean. They were there at the start of the UK Punk rock movement, along with the likes of The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Damned, Buzzcocks, UK Subs, Sham 69, Stiff Little Fingers, Subway Sect and many more.

During the '76-'77 period They performed extensively at venues across London and the UK such as The Roxy, The Vortex, The Bridge House, Music Machine, The Marquee, etc and performed live twice on BBC Radio 1's John Peel show, etc... Their singles "Teenage Treats" (a favourite of Peel's), "Can't Wait 'Til '78" (along with their version of "Waiting For My Man on the '77 "Live at The Vortex" album), are considered Punk classics from that period. Their first single with RCA, "Rubber Cars", was RCA's fastest selling single the week it was released and would have been a massive hit had RCA not reluctantly pulled the record for legal reasons. The band with the line up at that time split in 1979 during its release due to unresolvable managerial disputes.

NOW, jumping forward to 2024, Jesse Lynn-Dean has reinvented The Wasps with creative & talented musicians, with a pedigree in Punk and afficionados of UK Punk '76-'79 era.

They are all currently based on the Costa del Sol, southern Spain and in 2022 released their brand new album, "Punk Prayer" which is available now on Vinyl and CD.

With support from The Anoraks, Unorfadox, and The Outbursts

Description

The Hope and Anchor on Upper Street stands as a cultural touchstone in Islington, its Grade II listed facade a familiar landmark since 1880. More than a mere public house, it has long served as a crucible for emerging talent, a vital artery in London's live music circuit, and a consistent gathering place for the local community. Its enduring presence underscores a commitment to fostering artistic expression and providing a consistent social anchor for generations of patrons.

Within its walls, the atmosphere carries the faint, resonant hum of countless past performances, a subtle olfactory note of aged timber and spilled ale that speaks to decades of shared experience. The main bar, with its arched windows and a considered arrangement of mixed tables and chairs, offers a comfortable setting for conversation, while the basement venue below pulses with a distinct energy, illuminated by a modern lighting rig that belies its historic foundations.

The venue offers a comprehensive selection of quality drinks, from classic lagers to contemporary cocktails, ensuring diverse palates are catered for. While the main pub area is welcoming, it is important to note that the historic nature of the building means the basement music venue and the upstairs Hope Theatre regrettably lack wheelchair access. An outdoor area provides a welcome respite during warmer months.

Throughout the week, the Hope and Anchor hosts a dynamic programme of events, primarily focusing on live music spanning various genres, from rock and punk to new wave and contemporary acts. Beyond the regular gig schedule, the venue also marks seasonal celebrations and provides a platform for open mic nights, ensuring a continuous flow of entertainment and community engagement.
