The Gesualdo Six at St. Michael's, Linlithgow

Event Type

Genre : Music - Classical

Description

Experience a captivating tapestry of litanies, madrigals and lamentations, showcasing some of the extraordinary writing of two of the Renaissance?s most famous composers, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594) and Carlo Gesualdo (1566-1613).
The Gesualdo Six is a highly acclaimed British vocal consort. They comprise some of the UK?s finest consort singers, and the ensemble is known for its impeccable standard of performance. They perform widely across the UK and internationally. The group performs a broad-ranging repertoire, from the music of the medieval period through to contemporary compositions.
St. Michael's Parish Church, as it stands, was largely completed in 1540, although it's origins date back to it's consecration in 1242. The ecclesiastical masterpiece which resulted was much favoured as a place of worship by the Scottish monarchs, most notably Mary Queen of Scots who was born in Linlithgow Palace on December 8th 1542 and was baptised in St Michael?s Church.
This is an opportunity to experience choral music from the 16th century in an impressive setting appropriate to the period.

Description

St Michael's Parish Church stands as a significant national asset and a vibrant community hub within Linlithgow, deeply woven into the fabric of Scottish history. As one of the largest burgh churches in the Church of Scotland, its recent union to form the Linlithgow and Avon Valley Church underscores its enduring role. Positioned beside Linlithgow Palace, it holds a unique place, famously where Mary Queen of Scots was baptised, embodying centuries of local and national narratives.

Within its impressive Gothic architecture, a sense of profound history pervades the spacious interior. The cool, still air carries the faint scent of aged stone, while light filters through spectacular stained-glass windows, casting shifting hues across the ancient flagstones. Intricate woodwork and magnificent memorials speak to generations of craftsmanship and devotion, creating an atmosphere of quiet contemplation and grandeur.

Practical considerations for events are well-addressed. The venue offers level access to its main areas and accessible toilet facilities nearby. Ample parking is available within a short walk, and cyclists are welcomed with secure bike storage. While the churchyard provides a fascinating outdoor space, the adjacent Cross House offers additional meeting rooms and facilities.

Beyond its regular worship, St Michael's hosts a diverse calendar of activities and events throughout the week. These range from community-focused gatherings like book clubs and youth groups to public performances, including classical music concerts, jazz evenings, and choral recitals. It serves as a dynamic setting for cultural enrichment and communal engagement, reflecting its commitment as a church without walls.
