Two of the UK?s most electrifying folk voices. One legendary stage.
Detta Kenzie is turning heads with her bold, genre-blurring sound where folk meets soul, pop and cinematic fire. She joins BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner Sam Kelly, whose raw vocals and magnetic presence have made him a standout on the UK scene.
Set at London?s iconic Water Rats, the launchpad for countless future stars, this is a night of powerful songs, fearless performances and serious live energy.
DETTA KENZIE is an indie-folk singer and songwriter whose music, while often touched by traditional Celtic folk influences, is guided by a thoroughly modern and independent spirit. Her sound blends the richness of folk storytelling with elements of soul, cinematic minimalism and leftfield pop, creating music that is emotionally expansive, intimate and unmistakably her own.
Her songs are threaded with themes of transformation, survival and renewal. There?s a quiet spellcasting in her work, pulling listeners into a sonic world shaped by a love of language, a skill honed during her years as a secondary English teacher.
Sam Kelly is a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winning musician, singer, songwriter, and producer from Norfolk, UK. Described by legendary folk broadcaster Mike Harding as ?one of my favourite singers ever? and by Cara Dillon as ?an amazing singer with so much soul?, Sam has become one of the most accomplished and well-respected performers on the UK folk scene.
His band The Lost Boys are festival favourites across the UK and beyond, and as an accompanist on guitar and Irish bouzouki, his portfolio includes playing with the likes of Kate Rusby, Seth Lakeman, John McCusker, Phil Beer, and Katherine Priddy. Sam has become respected by peers and audiences alike as a unique and innovative arranger and pioneer of traditional folk song, and has produced albums by The Changing Room, Kitty Macfarlane, Chris Cleverley, Ainsley Hamill and more.
The iconic and legendary Water Rats has re-opened under new ownership and new management.
The venue has a prestigious history including Bob Dylan's first UK gig in 1962, The Pogues first gig in 1982 and Oasis' first London gig in 1994, along with a roll call of other household names throughout the years from Katy Perry to The Courteeners to Ra Ra Riot.
The Water Rats has undergone a top to bottom refurbishment.
There is a brand new high end D&B PA system, large stage and proper stage lighting rig.
Full Backline is provided if required: drum kit (minus breakables), bass amp (Hartke stack), 2 x guitar amps (Marshall stack and Fender combo).
The Water Rats is superbly located in what is the increasingly vibey music centre of King's Cross with unmatched transport links for London and beyond.
The venue also now offers great food from its brand new kitchen and a wide selection of drinks.
