Spend the day in the company of three of Britain?s most inspirational Black authors as they share their stories, experiences, inspirations and latest projects. The day features Dorothy Koomson, Nicola Williams and Claire Linney..
Dorothy Koomson is an award-winning, global bestselling author of 22 novels. Her thrillers have connected with readers all over the world, with sales of over 2.5 million copies in the UK alone. Dorothy featured on the 2021 Powerlist as one of the most influential Black people in Britain, appeared in GQ Style as a Black British trailblazer, and was a judge for the 2022 Women?s Prize for Fiction. 2023 marked Dorothy?s 20th anniversary as a published author. Her most recent novel, Give Him To Me is out now in paperback. Enjoy an relaxed conversation with Dorothy as she discusses her career and writing.
Nicola Williams started her career as a barrister in private practice, specialising in Criminal Law. She was a member of the first Independent Advisory Group to the Metropolitan Police Service (following recommendations arising from the Stephen Lawrence Report [1999]). She has been a part-time Crown Court Judge since 2010. She is an active volunteer for the Speakers for Schools programme, a charity which encourages young people from disadvantaged and under-represented communities to achieve their full career potential. She is the author of three legal thrillers: Without prejudice, Until proven innocent (winner of the Diverse Book Awards Readers? Choice Award 2024) and Killer instinct. Enjoy a talk by Nicola as she talks about her legal career and how she broke into writing.
Claire Linney worked in marketing for over twenty years, until stumbling across "Black Tudors: The Untold Story" which inspired her to want to bring the hidden stories of Black British history to life for the next generation. She is passionate about the need for more stories highlighting people of African descent throughout British history and advocating for diverse representation in children's literature. Her debut children's book Time Tub Travellers and the Silk Thief won the Ink Book Prize was longlisted for The Diverse Book Awards 2025 and Highly Commended in the Selfies Book Awards 2025.
Whenever there is a book about Black British history it's always followed by the words untold or hidden. Too many of the figures of Black British history are exactly that, unknown and hidden from mainstream history and culture. Join Claire's engaging session where book influencer, children's author and Black British history enthusiast will talk about some of her favourite 'hidden' figures from Black British history from Black Tudors to the Victorian circus. The session will look at why understanding Black history is so important in understanding British history and the critically important role that fiction has in highlighting these stories.
There is also an opportunity to meet the authors, purchase books and get them signed.
The day ends at 3pm.
