Old Fire Station Profile Pic

Description

The Old Fire Station in Oxford stands as a distinctive cultural asset, operating as a vibrant arts centre alongside Crisis Skyllight Oxford, a national charity dedicated to supporting homeless individuals. This dual purpose imbues the George Street institution with a profound community spirit, extending beyond mere entertainment to offer vital training and support. Its roots as a late 19th-century fire station and corn exchange lend a historical gravitas to its contemporary mission, making it a significant landmark in the city's social and artistic fabric.

Inside, the building retains a sense of its industrial past, with robust architectural details softened by the warmth of contemporary art installations and the inviting aroma of freshly brewed coffee from the ground floor cafe. The theatre space, while modern in its technical capabilities, carries the echoes of past gatherings, its seating often arranged to foster intimacy between performer and audience. Natural light filters into the gallery, illuminating diverse exhibitions.

Practical considerations are well-addressed, with step-free access available from both George Street and Gloucester Green, and lifts providing access to various levels, ensuring broad accessibility. The cafe transitions into a bar on show nights, offering a selection of drinks and light refreshments. While a traditional garden is absent, the urban setting provides a dynamic backdrop.

Throughout the year, the venue hosts a varied programme of events, encompassing contemporary theatre, stand-up comedy, live music, and dance performances. Its gallery spaces regularly feature visual arts exhibitions, complemented by workshops and spoken word events, all contributing to a rich and accessible cultural offering for the city and beyond.
