A regular 2026 Sunday session of soulful vocals, spoken word, jazz, fun & warmth with Mama Tokus overseeing proceedings.
Expect good music and wordplay - and a great atmosphere.

SCARED OF JAZZ?
You don't have to 'get it' to enjoy our session - just be open to joyful sounds, spontaneity, humour and larks, great musicianship, storytelling and chat, The Funk, characterful tunes that are the opposite of bland. You don't need to be some kind of jazz expert to get into this!
WORRIED ABOUT BEING A NEWBIE?
Fear not. I'll be there to welcome you in. I'm around for a chat and to make you feel comfy - especially if you've never been before. All the people who come are friendly too. It's casual and relaxed, there's no dress-code and the gig's a great way to meet new people (if you want to, of course). It's one of those places where you could visit alone and still feel comfy.
DON'T KNOW THE VENUE?
If you've never been to The Barrel House before, it's a lovely spot nestled beneath the castle at the top of the High Street in Totnes.
It has a long history in the region as a much-loved music venue and it has a regular programme of gigs by touring and local musicians and DJs.
The Barrel House does hot drinks and craft beers via the downstairs Totnes Brewing Co. On our sessions, there will be sharing plates of nibbles served at café tables AND you’re allowed to bring in food from takeaway joints nearby!
Unfortunately, the Barrel House ballroom is upstairs and not wheel-chair accessible.
WORRIED ABOUT PRICE?
Grab yourself an EarlyBird ticket and get in for just £6! Even better - sign up to be a JoySeeker member and get in absolutely FREE - whilst scoring yourself plenty of other membership benefits too. Sign up here: www.patreon.com/MamaTokus
DON'T WANT TO BOOK IN ADVANCE?
That's a shame, because it's nice to have something in a diary to look forward to (especially with a few mates involved).
And, like I said above, you get a cheaper deal if you're an Earlybird...
But if you want to keep it casual, you’ll be very welcomed on the door, although the price does go up to a tenner.

The Barrel House Ballroom stands as a significant cultural asset within Totnes, a dedicated hub for live performance that extends its influence across South Devon. Supported by Arts Council England and operating in collaboration with Sorting Room Studios, it plays a crucial role in sustaining the grassroots music ecosystem, actively contributing to initiatives like the Music Venue Trust. This commitment positions it beyond a mere commercial enterprise, fostering a vibrant space for artistic development and community engagement.
Inside, the venue offers an authentic atmosphere where the reverberating sound of live music fills the air. The space, often bathed in the warm glow of stage lights, feels intimate yet capable of holding a substantial energy, providing a direct connection between performers and audience. It is a setting designed for focused appreciation of sound and performance.
Located on the High Street, the Ballroom is situated on the first floor, with access currently via stairs. While seating is limited, the venue is actively exploring solutions to enhance accessibility for all patrons. On the ground floor, the Totnes Brewing Co. provides a selection of craft beers and other beverages, which can be enjoyed upstairs during events.
The programming at The Barrel House Ballroom is broad, encompassing a regular schedule of live music from various genres, alongside comedy nights, spoken word events, and DJ sets. It is also a consistent home for community-led initiatives, including open mic sessions and jam nights, providing a platform for local talent to develop and connect.
