Black Swan

The Black Swan stands as a vital component of the Newcastle Arts Centre, contributing significantly to the cultural fabric of the city. It serves as a dedicated space for performance and gathering, underpinning the Centre's broader mission to support and showcase artistic endeavours within the region and beyond. Its presence ensures a consistent programme of events, enriching the local community's access to diverse creative expressions.

Descending into the venue, a sense of intimate anticipation settles. The air often carries the faint, earthy scent of old stone, a subtle reminder of the building's history, while the carefully considered lighting casts a warm, amber glow across the exposed brickwork and sturdy wooden furnishings, inviting patrons to settle in. This subterranean setting cultivates an atmosphere conducive to focused appreciation, whether for a quiet drink or a captivating performance.

Accessed through a private, planted courtyard, the venue offers a secluded retreat from the bustle of Westgate Road. While the main bar area is situated on a stepped mezzanine, a service lift provides access for wheelchair users to the main performance space, ensuring a degree of accessibility. A fully licensed bar offers a selection of refreshments, complementing the evening's proceedings.

Throughout the year, The Black Swan hosts a varied calendar of events. These range from musical performances spanning various genres to dance showcases, theatrical productions, and spoken word evenings. Beyond public programming, the space also accommodates private functions, corporate gatherings, and celebratory events, demonstrating its adaptability as a community asset.
