About Peak Cavern (The Devil's Ar*e Cave)Peak Cavern (The Devil's Arse Cave) stands as a remarkable national asset within the Hope Valley, its colossal entrance, the largest natural cave mouth in Britain, having historically sheltered a thriving community of rope-makers until the early 20th century. Today, it serves as a distinctive events hub, drawing audiences and performers alike to its unique subterranean embrace, a testament to its enduring cultural and geological significance in the Peak District.
Within its imposing chambers, a palpable coolness permeates the air, carrying the faint scent of damp earth and ancient rock. Fibre-optic lighting subtly illuminates the unusual flowstone and stalactite formations, revealing the cavern's natural grandeur. The constant, soft murmur of subterranean water, particularly the perpetual cascade at Roger Rain's House, creates a deeply atmospheric backdrop, enhancing the remarkable acoustics of the Great Cave's Orchestra Gallery.
Practical considerations for visitors include a riverside approach through a dramatic limestone gorge. While the main entrance chamber offers accessibility for wheelchair users, the path leading to it involves a steady, steep incline. On-site facilities include a well-stocked bar for events, though permanent toilet facilities are located in the nearby village car park, with temporary accessible options sometimes provided for specific events. Seating for performances typically consists of metal chairs, with guests welcome to bring or hire cushions for comfort on the uneven ground.
Throughout the year, the cavern transforms into a dynamic venue, hosting a diverse programme of events. This includes a range of musical performances, immersive cave cinema screenings, and the much-anticipated annual candlelit Christmas carol concerts, alongside regular tours that feature traditional rope-making demonstrations, connecting visitors to its industrial past.
