Teviot Row House

Teviot Row House stands as a venerable institution in Edinburgh's Bristo Square, recognised globally as the oldest purpose-built student union. Since its opening in 1889, it has served as a dynamic hub for the University of Edinburgh Students' Association, evolving into a significant cultural asset for the city, extending its reach far beyond the academic calendar.

Within its distinctive 16th-century Scots palace-style architecture, featuring drum towers and Gothic traceried windows, the interiors reveal a rich tapestry of history. The air carries a subtle scent of aged timber and polished stone, while natural light filters through restored leaded glass, illuminating ornate plasterwork and original terrazzo floors. Spaces like the Debating Hall, with its magnificent hammerbeam roof, and the Library Bar, retain their unique character, offering varied atmospheres for gathering and contemplation.

Following extensive refurbishment, the venue now boasts enhanced accessibility, with a new ramp at the Bristo Square entrance ensuring nearly all public areas are wheelchair-friendly. A charming garden and roof terrace provide outdoor respite, complementing the diverse array of bars and catering facilities available throughout the building.

Throughout the year, Teviot Row House hosts a broad spectrum of activities, from student society gatherings and democratic meetings to regular social events and quizzes. It is also a pivotal location for major annual celebrations, including festive parties and graduation balls, and transforms each August into a prominent venue for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, presenting a wide range of performances.
