The Stand Comedy Club

The Stand Comedy Club in Edinburgh, situated on York Place, has been a cornerstone of Scottish cultural life since its establishment in 1995, pioneering the concept of a dedicated comedy club in the country. It functions as a crucial hub for developing new comedic talent, providing a consistent platform for both emerging and established performers, and significantly contributes to the nation's artistic fabric. Beyond its commercial operations, the club regularly dedicates evenings to charitable causes, having raised substantial funds for various organisations, underscoring its role as a community asset.

Within its walls, the atmosphere is immediately palpable, often carrying the faint, comforting scent of a well-loved performance space, a blend of stale beer and lingering laughter. The lighting is typically low and warm, creating an intimate, almost conspiratorial setting that draws the audience closer to the stage. The cabaret-style seating encourages a relaxed, communal experience, where the collective anticipation of a punchline is a tangible presence.

Access to the main venue at 5 York Place is via a series of well-lit steps at the building's front, with staff on hand to offer assistance, though prior arrangement is advised for those with specific mobility requirements. While a dedicated garden space is not a feature, a fully stocked bar provides a selection of drinks, and food options are available during certain performances. Seating is unreserved, making early arrival a sensible strategy for securing a preferred spot.

The club's calendar is consistently filled with a varied programme of contemporary comedy, showcasing a broad spectrum of acts from across Scotland and the international circuit. Regular events include "Red Raw" nights, offering a proving ground for new comedians, alongside themed showcases, improvised comedy, and weekend bills featuring multiple acts. The venue also hosts popular quiz nights, extending its entertainment beyond traditional stand-up.
