About Carnegie Leisure CentreThe Carnegie Leisure Centre, situated on Pilmuir Street in Dunfermline, stands as a significant civic building with deep historical roots, originally funded by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and designed by architect Hippolyte Blanc. It has undergone several modernisations and redevelopments, most recently between 2007 and 2012, to become a comprehensive local facility. The centre's impressive Scots Renaissance facade hints at the historic character within, which has been carefully retained and restored alongside modern amenities.
The interior of the Carnegie Leisure Centre offers a blend of its Edwardian origins and contemporary functionality. Original features such as timber panelling, pilasters, and carved timber doorpieces have been preserved, contributing to a sense of historical gravitas. The main swimming pool area, with its decorative cast-iron columns and open steel/cast-iron roof truss, retains a grand atmosphere, complemented by a large Diocletian window. The centre provides a wide array of facilities, including multiple swimming pools (a main 25m pool, a training pool, and a children's pool), a health suite with sauna and steam room, an 85-station gym, fitness studios, sports halls, squash courts, and a climbing wall. There is also an adventure play area for children.
Practical amenities include a café for refreshments and ample parking, with the centre being easily accessible from Dunfermline's High Street and bus station. The venue is well-signposted for visitors. The centre is equipped to cater for a range of accessibility needs, offering ramp access, unassisted wheelchair access, disabled toilets and changing facilities, a pool hoist, and a passenger lift.
The Carnegie Leisure Centre hosts a variety of activities and events, from regular fitness classes and sports coaching for all ages to specific sessions like Friday Night Pool Disco. It also serves as a venue for sports clubs, including waterpolo, hockey, and artistic swimming, and offers facilities for parties and venue hire for diverse events.
