About Stonehaven Town Hall

Stonehaven Town Hall, located on Allardice Street, is a substantial municipal building that has served as a central hub for civic and community events since its opening in 1878. Designed in the Renaissance style by James Matthews and William Lawrie, the hall was constructed from rubble masonry at a cost of £4,000. It stands as a Category B listed building, reflecting its architectural significance.

The interior of the hall features an assembly hall, a billiard room, and a reading room. The main hall, a medium-sized theatre and auditorium, can accommodate approximately 260 people in a standing configuration, or 270 in a theatre setup, and 150 for a ceilidh. The walls are described as dark pink on the lower section and light pink on the upper, with a maroon roof adorned with white mouldings. The floor is polished wood, and the stage has blue front-of-house tabs and black stage curtains.

The venue offers disabled access via a side entrance, though there is no access to the upper parts of the hall. Refreshments can be prepared in a kitchen equipped with an electric cooker, microwave, kettle, and fridge/freezer. Limited on-street parking is available, with a public car park opposite in Market Square. The hall is easily accessible by public transport, with regular bus and train services to Stonehaven.

Throughout its history, Stonehaven Town Hall has hosted a diverse range of events, from the early performances of showman Walford Bodie in 1884 to concerts by Kathleen Ferrier in 1943. It has also been the venue for annual art exhibitions, folk and beer festivals, and is a popular location for local events and private functions.
