About Acko Pulco and The Cliff Divers
After 21 years in retirement the former front man and vocalist of The Bogus Brothers is back.
Andy Atkinson left The Bogus Brothers in late 1995 after ten years with the band, who, by then, had established themselves as an exciting and enthralling live band touring throughout the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe and had released a number of successful albums.
Since then Andy has kept an involvement with live music through his compering work, introducing big name acts at festivals like Apollo, Moonbeams, Galtres, Cornucopia, Underneath The Stars, Shepley and others as well as continuing to run the Selby FunDay Concert annually for the local Town Council.
He also works for the BBC in his capacity as a sports commentator and is a well noted and busy boxing MC.
Various attempts had been made to tease him out of his ‘retirement’ but, finally, the opportunity to put together a band featuring some former colleagues and well-known York musicians saw the formation of Acko Pulco and The Cliff Divers. The name is more than a nod in the direction of their chosen musical genre – Bordertown Tex Mex, encompassing the music of the likes of The Mavericks, Los Lobos, The Texas Tornadoes, Steve Earle and even 'The King', Elvis.
With the emphasis on ‘a right good night out’ the band comprises Andy on vocals, the Cliff Divers are ex Bogus Brother and Goosehorn Tim Bruce on bass, one–time Bogus soundman Robin Bowes on guitar, Hairul Hasnan on drums, former Goosehorns and Sad Cafe keyboard player Simon Waggott, Arts Barger Daniel Bowater on accordion and harmonica, ex-Littlemores accordion and trumpet player Ben Crosthwaite, Mark Ellerker on harmonica and Andy’s daughter Jess on backing vocals.
The band also feature their own onstage Cantina bar run by ex Bogus tour manager Paul Barker!
It's a difficult night if you can't dance!
