About Suffolk Concert Band
The band was formed in 1967 as the Suffolk Military Band which in turn originated from an adult education course in Ipswich with a core of members from the Ipswich Town Brass Band and the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Territorial Regimental Band. Fifty years later the band has developed into a versatile ensemble of musicians from Ipswich and the surrounding locale.
In the early 1970s the band became a self-contained and civilian organisation which financed itself by playing at fetes and concerts. The band patron was General Sir Richard Goodwin, an ex-Suffolk Regiment soldier and great supporter of the band.
The band concerts became very entertaining events with many local musicians appearing as guests. The band played in a variety of performance venues. When Ipswich opened a new venue in the Corn Exchange, the band played in the inaugural week and because regular performers at this new venue. The band were regular summer visitors to the Pier Pavilion in Felixstowe with Handel Evans regular Tuesday organ and band concerts.
We rehearse on Wednesday evenings at Holy Trinity Church Hall, Back Hamlet, Ipswich, IP3 8AJ.
Visitors and potential new members are always welcome.
We don't currently have any future gigs listed for Suffolk Concert Band.
