Live Performance
Blues & Hokum
Struggle Buggy is an acoustic blues band playing good-time blues, ragtime, hokum and more.
Featuring blues duo Lee Bates and Billy Newton, alongside Paul Summerson on Bass and Keith Smith on drums.
Struggle Buggy is an unique in being an acoustic Blues band playing Delta, Ragtime, Hokum, Jug Band and a little Chicago Blues. Lee and Billy have spent the last 11 years playing together and have built a reputation as being one of the best and most entertaining acts on the British Blues scene.
Before playing in a duo with Lee, Billy was the harp player with the Scandalous Bachelors - undoubtedly one of the finest and most influential R'n'B bands to have emerged from the northeast. The Scandalous Bachelors were even name checked by The Hoax as being their favourite band in the mid-nineties. Paul Summerson was the original Bass player in the Scandalous Bachelors and was known for his wild stage antics and his supreme skill as a bass player. After leaving the Bachelors Paul later went onto become part of acoustic Folk/World Music group Opas; here Paul showed his versatility on a variety of stringed instruments.
Drummer Keith Smith is a drummer with a great feel for the music, the kind you can't teach! Keith has played with such bands as: Roadhouse, Speakeasy and the Fabulous Wildon Bros. He has also toured the UK extensively with the Jazz Trumpeter and Broadcaster 'Digby Fairweather.
As Struggle Buggy the band deliver a highly entertaining show of classic Blues from artists such as Washboard Sam, Tampa Red, Big Bill Broonzy and Little Walter.
