David Owen Norris’s Jupiter Project

Caroline Balding - violin, Katy Bircher - flute, Sarah McMahon - cello, David Owen Norris - Broadwood Grand Pianoforte of 1828

MOZART - Overture to The Magic Flute (arr. Hummel)

MOZART - Piano Concerto No.21 in C, K.467 (arr. Cramer)

MOZART - Overture to The Marriage of Figaro (arr. Hummel)

MOZART - Symphony No.41 in C ‘The Jupiter’, K.551(arr. Clementi)

As Mozart’s reputation grew in the 19th century, three great virtuosi of the pianoforte recomposed his overtures, symphonies and concertos, adding many more notes to suit a more flamboyant style of playing on a much larger instrument. But instead of a full orchestra, Clementi, Cramer and Hummel wrote for a quartet of piano, violin, flute and cello. On nineteenth-century instruments the results are both exciting and beautiful.
