Description

The Lumos Quintet was formed late 2014 in a university halls kitchen as five instrumentalists couldn't wait for their Music College term to start. Having usually only performed as part of classes at the Birmingham Conservatoire, the Quintet tries to get experience playing wherever they can. Last year they entertained guests at the opening of the practice rooms at My Student Village Birmingham; fittingly, the halls where they were initally formed. Today the quintet plays a variety of genres that allows each player to come out as a soloist.

The Quintet Consists of Georgina Silverton (Flute), Harriet Brown (Oboe), Benjamin Garalnick (French Horn), Hugh Woolley (Bassoon), and Jacob Perry (Clarinet). All members of the Quintet are students at the Birmingham Conservatoire, taught by world renowned teachers and antendees of masterclasses taken by such names as James Galway, Jonathan Kelly, William Bennett, Nicholas Daniel, Francois Leleux, John Orford, Margaret Cookhorn, Sarah Burnett, Rainer Gibbons, Rachael Pankhurst, Jonathon Small, Katie Wooley, Froydis Ree, Tim Lines, Michael Collins and Julian Bliss. They have also had opportunities in orchestras such as playing Respighi's Pines of Rome as part of a pre-concert for the CBSO in Symphony Hall, performances at The Royal Albert Hall, and concert halls abroad.

The quintet have been invited to be the Outreach Ensemble for the 2018 Hot Springs Festival in Arkansas, which is a really exciting opportunity for them to share their love of music.

Description

Being one of Birmingham’s best attractions, The Birmingham Botanical Gardens offers something for everyone, be it one of our four stunning glasshouses showing tropical rainforest to arid desert, beautiful gardens, playground, tearoom or our gift shop.

The Main Lawn is an amphitheatre, with its axis running roughly south-west from the Terrace to the Bandstand. This acts as a sun trap and the higher ground behind cuts off the cold northerly winds, so the Lawn is a popular spot for sunbathing and picnics in fine weather. The grass gets favoured treatment to keep the turf in the fine springy condition which makes it such a pleasure to walk on and a joy to behold from the Terrace.

The Bandstand is surrounded by colourful summer and winter bedding displays, in keeping with the period of its creation. On the far side of the Bandstand is the fountain, and the planting areas around the fountain have been enriched with shrubs for all seasons, including Peonies, Abelias, Camellias and Hydrangeas.
