UK jazz guitarist Neil C Young is a gifted guitarist who is establishing his unique talent internationally through a raw combination of expression and technique.

Having performed both nationally and internationally, at festivals such as the Romerias de Mayo, Holguin, Cuba (2010), the Zihuatanejo International Guitar Festival, Mexico (2006), the Manchester Jazz Festival (2011) and the 2008 London Bossanova Festival, Neil is in demand. This is alongside regular performances in the UK and as well as numerous gigs in both Europe and the United States.

Canadian American Records nominated Neil and the trio in 2011 and 2012 for the initial ballot of the Grammy awards, for best improvised solo and best instrumental jazz album respectively. Also, the trio were nominated for the UK Jazz Services promoters choice award in 2008.

One of his original compositions, ‘Next’, featured on the WOA Records’ popular Goa Chillout Zone Volume 2 which reached the heights of number 2 in the Indian Album Charts in October 2009 and since then has had regular airplay on Indian commercial radio with singles from his last 2 albums which were released by Canadian American Records (US)

Along with this performance recognition, Neil has also received acclaim for his work through the International Songwriting Competition (2006) with two pieces being shortlisted in the instrumental category, ‘Time will sing’ and ‘That Darned’, this recognition has also been given through a honourable mention at the Canary Islands International Songwriting Competition.

Neil has played and worked with many other artists across different genres through his career, Gary Boyle, Steve Tromans, Pat McCarthy, Pat Sprakes, Barnaby Dickinson, The Earlies, Sara Lowes, Denny Laine, King Creosote to name a few. This all add to the influences already within Neil’s playing and the influences continue to grow.

Matt & Phred's is a long established live music venue, situated in Manchester's trendy Northern Quarter. Over the years the likes of Sneaky, Kit Downes, Marius Neset, Manu Delago, the Dagda Quartet, Jamie Cullum and even Adele have graced the stage in our little neighbourhood joint.

Most notably known for showcasing the best in local and international Jazz, Matt & Phred's offers much, much more. We still have live music gigs 6 nights a week, encompassing the likes of Jazz, Folk, Gypsy, Electro, Salsa, Swing, World and even a little bit of Ska.

As well as being able to see some amazingly talented musicians, our bar and kitchen team are also at the top of their game. If you enjoy cocktails then this is the place to be. We also have a cracking wine list with featured wines of the month and of course anyone who has ever been to the club knows just how good the pizzas are and at weekends we have added specials to tantalise your taste buds!

The gigs are free Monday to Thursday and there is a teeny tiny £5 door charge on Friday and Saturday nights. We highly recommend you book a table for weekend nights as we do get busy and there's no better way to enjoy the bands whilst being waited on by our fabulous bar team.
