Description

Okehampton Excelsior Silver Band is a traditional Brass Band which performs concerts, attends contests and plays at carnivals, fetes, parades and events.

Okehampton Band combines a strong community spirit and family focus alongside a commitment to improve our musicianship via competition and to promote all that is best about the brass band tradition.

Our members enjoy making music together. In turn we hope that by supporting local community events we are able to bring pleasure to a diversity of audiences. In the last year, for example, as well as formal concerts and bandstand appearances, we have played for engagements as diverse as the Lustleigh Mayday Celebrations, the Christmas Fair at Castle Drogo and Jacobstowe’s Royal Wedding Party. Our annual charity concert this year raised over £300 in support of Devon Air Ambulance.

We make something of a speciality of marching, travelling as far as Wadebridge and Bridgerule as well as supporting local carnivals such as Okehampton, South Zeal, Hatherleigh. Moretonhampstead and Newton Abbot. We also march in support of the local community leading, for example, the Remembrance Parade, the Civic Service and the Scout’s St George’s Day Parade. This year, based on a march through the village, we won the deportment class at the West of England Bandsmen’s Festival in Bugle, an event we have won six out of the last seven years.

We currently compete in the fourth section but having finished fourth in this year’s Regional Championships and won the fourth section at Bugle too we hope to continue to improve our results and rankings. We always welcome new players, whether experienced or beginners. Have a look at [our main band page for more information] and if you would like to speak to someone either about joining or engaging the band for one of your events do visit our contacts page.

We work hard as a band both to be self-supporting and support other charities but instruments, uniforms and music are all expensive. We are really grateful for the continued support of both Okehampton Town Council and our sponsors, Specsavers, Okehampton.
