Brass Band

Description

We are a friendly, entertaining and hardworking brass band which meets for rehearsals at Banbury Academy, Ruskin Road, Easington, Banbury on Monday evenings, from 7.30 – 9.30 pm.

We also have a Training band starting at 6.30pm on Monday evenings during term time at the school too!

We are delighted therefore to welcome players of all standards into our organization. Where possible we will provide instruments if required.

Please contact us, if you are interested in joining our Band or just come along to a rehearsal.

In 1886 a group of railway workers constructing the Great Western Railway joined together with local villagers in Hook Norton to form the band. The very first rehearsals were held at the brewery because the founder member and first bandmaster was a Mr John Harris, one of the brewery’s directors. The band flourished during the first part of the 20th century, but village bands generally declined after the second world war, for fairly obvious reasons. Hook Norton survived by moving to Banbury and attracting players from a wider area.
The band was granted charitable status in 1999 and has a large stock of instruments so that nobody is prevented from playing by the lack of an instrument. Although the band is based here in Banbury, we are proud of our very strong links with Hook Norton. The brewery is our main sponsor, and the current Managing Director, Mr James Clarke, is our President as was his father and grandfather before him.

Description

Hathersage outdoor heated swimming pool is set in a lawned enclosure with fully refurbished and covered changing facilities, Toilets, Hot showers and disabled access.

Every year from March through to September It offers the opportunity to swim in the open air, amidst the glorious Peak District scenery, in water which is heated to 28°C.

It is a truly unique facility with a full size band stand looking over the pool which is often in use.

Every third Friday of the month during the summer the pool hosts a "Night Swim" with live bands on the band stand allowing customers to swim whilst listening to a variety of music.

In 2013 the pool was voted by the Telegraph "Number 1 Lido in the UK!"

Update..
If you had said to someone a few years ago “I am going for a swim at Hathersage Heated Outdoor Pool” during Winter they’d have probably laughed at you and told you its closed for the winter! The winter heated season went from strength to strength, and due to the attendance we were able to extend the opening hours each month enabling us to be open 7 days a week through the winter. It was amazing to see the pool being used so well by a huge variety of people from babies of 6 months old having their first ever outdoor swim to 80+ years olds swimming on a regular occasion and many regular swimmers all keeping their fitness up during the winter. Over the Christmas period literally 1000s of people flocked to enjoy the novelty of swimming outdoors for the first time ever in heated water, many comparing the experience to visiting the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. Whilst there were queues on some days staff implemented a system and extended the opening hours to ensure everyone managed to get a swim.

Visit the website for opening times.
